Whittlesea City won 21 medals at the Little Athletics state track and field championships two weeks ago.

The centre had 59 athletes compete at the championships at Casey Fields over the weekend of March 19-20.

“Absolutely outstanding,” was how team manager Craig Chapman described the results.

“Whittlesea City brought home seven gold, nine silver and five bronze medals.

“But the really pleasing factor was the staggering number of topeight finalists.

“Whittlesea City had an athlete competing in the final eight in most events.”

Shehana Wijesundara won two gold medals, the under11 girls 60 metre hurdles and long jump, including a Victorianbest performance in the hurdles.

She also won silver in the 80 metre hurdles and triple jump.

River Walker (under-9 boys shot put), Thomas Sims (under-10 boys high jump), Ellie Kewish (under-11 girls high jump), Alyssa Bannan (under-14 girls high jump) and Ethan Lamb (under-14 boys 90 metre hurdles) also took home gold medals.

Walker also won silver in the under-nine boys discus.

“Being finalists and winning medals is due to the dedication and hard work of the athletes, coaches, clubs and support from parents at Whittlesea City to produce these amazing results,” Chapman said.

The championships also ended the little athletics careers of Macey Gibbs, Tamara Geddes, Emma Newton, Tiarna McPherson, EllieMay Dreier, Luke Cullen, Reuben Hayes and Nathan Andersen, who are too old to continue to compete next season.
