Cannons, Knights outgunned in TAC Cup openers

Calder Cannons gave up a half­time lead to lose by 41 points in the opening round of the TAC Cup.

The Cannons and Eastern Ranges kicked off the season under lights at Rams Arena on Thursday, and the Ranges started the better of the two to lead by 10 points at quarter­-time.

Four goals to one in the second quarter put the Cannons 10 points in front before the Ranges kicked away in the second half with 14 goals to six to win, 18.8 (116)­ 11.9 (75).

Muhammad Saad, Karl Brown and Brodie Meyers were the multiple goal-kickers for the Cannons with two each, while Bradley Bernacki, Harrison Rocke and Benjamin Ronke were named in the best.

Northern Knights’ also had a tough start to the season on the wrong end of a thumping from Sandringham Dragons.

Eleven scoring shots to two in the first quarter set the tone for the day with the Dragons winning 22.11 (143)–7.11 (53) at IKON Park on Saturday.

Lachlan Wilson kicked two for the Knights and was also named best player.
