Greenvale Kangaroos’ women’s sides continue to learn on the run.

For the first time, the Kangaroos have sides in the Cricket Victoria Women’s Cricket Community north-west B T20 competition and the inaugural North West Metropolitan Cricket Association – Women’s Social T20 competition.

Kangaroos captain-coach Sonja Viehl said it was a matter of putting what they were learning in training onto the field.

“It’s been good, we’re just gelling together and getting better,” she said.

“We’re developing the players and they’re all getting to know each other.

“It’s about getting them to now hit and run. Some who are playing like the longer format of the game and are blocking shots.”

Viehl said it was pleasing to see some of the small milestones including Sandamalie Perera hitting her first six in the second round and Danielle Kaitu’s raw fielding talent.

The WCCC side faced a double header on Sunday, with matches against Gisborne and Melton Centrals.

The Kangaroos were unable to break through for their first win.

Gisborne made 2-64 in reply to the Kangaroos’ total of 60. Perera was the standout for the Kangaroos, top scoring with 15 and taking 2-13.

In the second game, the Kangaroos made 5-93 in reply to Centrals’ 3-135. Reagan and Chey Macumber took the wickets for the Kangaroos, while Perera produced her highest score, making 34 before retiring.

The Kangaroos’ second side is playing in the NWMCA competition, which is more a social competition. They had a bye on Sunday.

Viehl, who is also competition co-ordinator, said a lot of new players had taken up the sport due to the relaxed feel of the competition.

“There’s over 100 women across 12 teams,” she said.

“We’ve [Greenvale] got one lady that has a prosthetic leg. There’s quite a few mothers and daughters playing.

“We’re thrilled with how both Greenvale teams are going.”

Viehl said the community was getting behind the teams and was coming down to help out.

She said they were still after players if anyone was keen to play.

“A lot of players have a few nerves, but once they start they are hooked.”

In other women’s CVWCCC results, Craigieburn had little trouble accounting for Carlton Brunswick. Craigieburn made 2-50 in reply to Carlton-Brunswick’s 8-47.

Rebecca Lines took 4-7 for Craigieburn.

Tullamarine had a good win against Melbourne University. The Demons made 3-128 from their overs, with Helen Harris top scoring with 52 at the top of the order.

Melbourne University finished 2-121 in reply.

In the Victorian Turf Cricket Association women’s competition, Westmeadows was defeated by Sydenham-Hillside.

The Storm made 5-116, with Westmeadows falling short making 5-85 in reply.
