Washout forces games to one-dayers in Premier Cricket

Rain played havoc with the first round of two-day matches in Victorian Premier Cricket.

While several matches got under way, rain caused issues across the board with just four first XI matches getting started.

As per Premier Cricket rules, all first XI matches will revert to one-dayers next week, because no one claimed first innings points on Saturday.

Greenvale Kangaroos and Geelong got 15 overs in their first XI game before heavy rain ended play.

The Kangaroos started well and made 31 runs without the loss of a wicket. But Geelong got three wickets in quick succession, to go from 0-31 to 3-40.

The Kangaroos steadied and were 3-61 when the game was called off.

Captain-coach Matthew Love was unbeaten on 33 off 42 balls, while Bernard Kelly was six not out.

Jake Reed had 2-27 for Geelong.

However, those scores mean little now, with the scores wiped and the game changed to a one-dayer.

That’s also the case for the second XI and fourth XI, with no one in those grades claiming points on Saturday.

The Kangaroos second XI was 1-97 when play was halted against Geelong, while the Kangaroos were in control at 5-48 in the fourths match against Geelong.

The third XI side’s match, also against Geelong, will remain as a two-day match, with one side in that grade already claiming first innings points.

The Kangaroos are in trouble at 5-79.

Meanwhile in Women’s Premier Cricket, Plenty Valley suffered its first loss of the one-day season on Sunday.

Having won a rare two games in a row, the Bats were hoping to make it a hat trick against Melbourne. The Bats made 134, bowled out with three and half overs remaining.

Sophie Reid held the innings together, with 55 not out. After losing an early wicket, Melbourne was cruising at 1-71 and well on track to get the runs.

The Bats hit back taking four wickets, including 3-5 to have Melbourne 5-85. Melbourne steadied and were able to hit the winning runs with more than 10 overs remaining.
