Craigieburn has been identified as a common area for calls to triple-0 regarding children left in cars.
Ambulance Victoria said its paramedics had responded to more than 230 reports of people locked in cars this summer.
It said that between December 1, 2023 and November 30, 2024, paramedics were called to 1211 cases of people locked in cars.
The most common suburbs for the calls were Pakenham, Melton, Hoppers Crossing, Craigieburn and Dandenong.
Ambulance Victoria regional and clinical operations director Steve Doyle said while latest data suggested cases had reduced over the last 12 months, the number of call-outs during hot weather was concerning.
“We are urging Victorians to never leave kids or elderly people in parked cars, even on mild days. The temperature inside a vehicle can double and become deadly within minutes,” he said.
“We’re asking parents and carers to always take children and elderly people with them whenever they get out of the car. We know that children can often become accidentally locked in cars. We encourage parents and carers to make sure keys are kept with them and to be alert while loading family members in and out of vehicles.
“Accidents happen, and if someone does get locked in a vehicle, call triple-0.”
