A Greenvale man who stole $25 from an elderly woman’s hands as she sat waiting for a bus yesterday has been arrested and charged.
A woman driving along Ardlie Street in Westmeadows witnessed the incident about 4.15pm and pulled over to help the 77-year-old victim.
Leading Senior Constable Adam West said she confronted the man and the two ended up in a tussle.
“The offender stomped on the woman’s feet and punched her to the face before fleeing the scene.
“The woman returned to the bus stop to check on the elderly woman’s welfare before driving off,” Leading Senior Constable West said.
He said bystanders made a citizens arrest on the alleged offender, who was held until police arrived.
He has been charged with theft and unlawful assault and bailed to appear before the Broadmeadows Magistrates’ Court on May 3.
Police are hoping to speak to the woman who pulled over to help with their investigation.
