Commonwealth Games: Bundoora’s Jian Fang Lay into semi-finals

Bundoora’s Jian Fang Lay is through to the semi-finals in the women’s table tennis singles event at the Commonwealth Games.

Lay, who has already won bronze in the women’s teams event, will face Singapore’s Yu Mengyu for a spot in the medal matches.

Wrestlers Stevie Kelly, Ali Abdo and Mehrdad Tarash weren’t as lucky with all three missing the finals in their events.

Kelly, who lives in Sunbury, was knocked out in the quarter finals losing to Wales’ Sarah Connolly.

Sydenham’s Tarash also lost in the quarter finals in the 65-kilogram division.

Abdo, from Altona, lost to the eventual gold medalist Tamerlan Tagziev  in the round of 16 in the 86-kilogram division.
