Hume City was made to pay for failing to take its chances in the National Premier League match against Bentleigh Greens on Sunday.
The Greens scored all their goals in the second half to win 3-0 at Broadmeadows Valley Park.
The win took Bentleigh to fourth on the ladder with 20 points, while City sits seventh with 16 points from five wins, six losses and a draw.
South Melbourne tops the table with 30 points, followed by Oakleigh Cannons (27) and Heidelberg United (23).
City coach Louie Acevski said the Greens’ ability to take their goalscoring chances was the only difference between the sides.
“They took their chances, we didn’t take ours,” he said.
“I thought we had four or five good chances and couldn’t score and their goalkeeper had to make three massive saves.
“Overall I was happy with the result but we just missed too many opportunities.”
Acevski said his side had a fair share of general play.
“But we were naive in certain situations and made mistakes and Bentleigh made us pay,” he said..
“We have to take the opportunities we get, especially against good sides.”
Kume Taseski was City’s best in what Acevski described as a good team effort.
City will be away to Northcote City on Sunday after a Dockerty Cup quarter-final against South Springvale on Wednesday.
“The Wednesday night match is very important as it means not only going into the semi-finals of the Dockerty Cup but getting into the [national] FFA Cup,” Acevski said.
“We really want to get into the FFA Cup to play against the best teams in Australia.
“Our boys are young, so the more you throw at them the better they can take playing such a tough schedule.”
