Hume City Broncos returned to the winner’s list with a five-point win against Diamond Valley in Big V State Championship division men’s basketball on Saturday.
The Broncos jumped out of the blocks, scoring 27 to 19 points in the first quarter, before the Eagles hit back in the second to take a three-point lead into half-time.
The Broncos outscored the Eagles in the third and fourth terms, securing a 101-96 victory. The win was their first in eight matches. Jermaine Maybank led Hume City with 24 points, while Jamal Brown had 21.
Whittlesea won a low-scoring state championship clash against Hawthorn, 68-67. The Pacers kept the Magic to nine points in the final quarter to claim the victory.
Jason Dirkx top scored with 17 points, while Michael Petridis finished with 15.
In women’s state championship, the Broncos lost to Eltham, 59-51.
Both teams struggled to make baskets, with the Wildcats putting up 23 more attempts from the field. But Eltham was able to put a poor second quarter behind it to steal the game.
Hume City’s Colleen Planeta continued her good form with 23 points and 15 rebounds.
In division 1 women’s, Craigieburn Eagles lost to Latrobe City Energy, 89-56. Whittlesea’s women defeated Sunbury 80-58.
