SUNBURY SHIRE SESSIONS
■ After nearly 19 years of campaigning by the Sunbury Residents Association (SRA) and others, Sunbury is at the doorstep of separating from the city of Hume.
I thank the local movement in getting to a point where the state government has agreed to establish the new municipality and urge all to attend one of the community consultation sessions, which are aimed at obtaining responses about matters to be resolved in the shire’s establishment. For people unable to attend, a direct submission can be made to the local government (Sunbury out of Hume City Council) panel GPO Box 2392, Melbourne Victoria 3001, by this Friday.
The key issues, as seen by the SRA, are the overwhelming case for all of the Melbourne airport to be within the new municipality of the shire of Sunbury, and for all proceeds of the sale of the Racecourse Road land to be allocated for the benefit of the new Sunbury shire.
We need to be ready to counteract the few who have not accepted the democratic wishes of the majority of Sunbury residents and who are seeking to unduly delay establishment of the Sunbury shire.

RE. WURUNBIK A SAFER SUBURB NAME, SAY BEVERIDGE RESIDENTS (Weekly, March 4)
■ Justifications given by the Wurunbik Working Group to change the name of a part of Beveridge to Wurunbik are not valid and can’t be true. Just leave the name as it is. I have no doubt the majority of residents are happy with “Beveridge” being left as “Beveridge” for this pocket of boundary land. A big NO to this ridiculous proposal. It’s a joke.
I can’t see how Whittlesea council could waste so many resources and taxpayers’ money even considering this proposal and sending registered mail to affected property holders.

350 LA TROBE UNIVERSITY JOBS TO GO IN FIVE-YEAR PLAN (Weekly online)
■ What planet is [vice-chancellor John] Dewar on when he says La Trobe is aiming to be in the top three tertiary institutions in Victoria and the top 12 in Australia. La Trobe is bottom of the Victorian universities with a 5 per cent drop in first preferences, a $65 million budget black hole and a stated desire to pursue quality. How do these things line up with 25 per cent growth?
