UPDATE: It’s the dream of every young rapper – to grace the same stage as one of your idols.
For Chris “Codix” Dixon, that dream has been realised.
The 24-year-old, who is part of northern suburbs rap collective R.E.A.L Music, has won a competition supporting Australian hip hop stars Bliss N Eso on the Bendigo leg of their Circus Under the Stars tour.
The competition involved entering a piece of original work. Dixon entered a song called The Inner Me.
ARIA winners Bliss N Eso received hundreds of entries and spent weeks sifting through artist submissions. A winner was chosen for each of the 15 legs of the group’s tour.
Dixon made the cut and was one of three finalists for the Bendigo leg.
“This sort of thing is life-changing.
“It’s something you dream of as a kid, to play to such a big crowd. I get chills thinking about it.”
Dixon has been gaining popularity performing at various venues around Melbourne, including the Prince of Wales, Laundry Bar, The Evelyn Hotel, Revolver and Ding Dong Lounge.
As for the man behind the music, he’s no stereotypical egocentric rapper.
Dixon hosts street events to give other aspiring rappers the chance to perform in front of a crowd, holds pen-and-pad writing sessions and organises Brighter Days, a series of all-age music event fundraisers.
“I’m pretty lucky,” Dixon says. “Music has been good to me and it got me through some tough times as a kid. I just want to be able to do the same for others out there.”
