Cash drought kills off Sunbury youth club

The Sunbury Police and Citizens Youth Club held farewell drinks last Friday night to celebrate nine years of service to Sunbury young people and community support.

Club leader Stuart Richie and the team posted a long and heartfelt “thank you” message on Facebook on March 7 following news the club would be forced to close its doors this month.

Residents took the chance to express their regret and sadness over the club’s closure.

The closure follows news the federal government will renege on a $40,000 Labor funding pledge

that McEwan MP Rob Mitchell announced in August last year. The $40,000 was to be used to conduct a new martial arts program.

Mr Mitchell described the government’s decision as insulting.

“Their poor excuse for scrapping the promised funding … is that they considered this an election promise and apparently the Liberal Party have made it a policy not to follow through on promises,” he said.
