Mernda Primary School pupils have joined the growing Into the
Light Festival in Whittlesea, making lanterns to glow after dark and
mark the arrival of spring.
The festival was established by local artists two years ago to
build community connections through art and relieve social isolation
following the 2009 bushfires.
Whittlesea mayor Rex Griffin said the project showcased local
talent and reflected the recovery experience in Whittlesea following the
Black Saturday fires, and had been embraced by the community.
The festival will be held on Sunday from 3.30pm at the Whittlesea
Showgrounds. It will include lantern decorating, indigenous games and
live music. There will be a parade with lighted lanterns after sunset.
