A late Calder Cannons comeback was not enough as they lost in a thriller to the Western Jets on Friday night.
The match went down to the wire as the two local rivals opened the TAC Cup season.
The Cannons kicked the first two goals before the Jets responded with two of their own to leave scores level at quarter-time.
The Jets jumped out to a 20-point lead at the main break.
Three goals to two for the Cannons in the third quarter brought the margin back to 15 points.
Both teams had opportunities in the final quarter, with the Cannons reducing the margin to under a goal with just over three minutes to go. But they wouldn’t get the chance to hit the front, with the only score in that time a point to the Jets.
The Cannons lost 12.9 (81)-12.5 (77).
Jeremy O’Sullivan and Curtis Taylor kicked three goals each for the Cannons.
Co-captain Mitchell Podhajski was named the Cannons best, while Lachlan Sholl and Sam Ramsay were handy contributors.
Podhajski was named co-captain on Tuesday night alongside Jack Bytel.
Jack Evans and Curtis Taylor round out the leadership group, named as vice-captains. The Cannons host a second straight night match, taking on Eastern Ranges on Thursday night.
