Tayla Vlaeminck selected for Australia

Plenty Valley young gun Tayla Vlaeminck could make her senior debut for Australia after being named in the Southern Stars squad for the  Commonwealth Bank Women’s T20 International series.

Vlaeminck was one of two uncapped players named in the 13-player squad on Wednesday morning, with the squad to play three T20s against New Zealand starting later this month.

Plenty Valley coach Adam Drinkwell said it was exciting for the club to see Vlaeminck selected for Australia.

Vlaeminck made her debut for the Bats in the 2012-13 season. She played seven games last season for the club, taking five wickets.

“It’s super exciting and everyone at the club is excited for her,” Drinkwell said.

“She’s been at the club for a number of years since coming from Bendigo.

“It’s already boosted the girls. She’s already in the Victorian squad along with Rhiann O’Donnell.

“We’re a little surprised, but she’s been with the National Performance Squad through the winter and at the forefront of selectors.”

The 19-year-old’s selection comes after a few injury riddled years, which includes two knee reconstructions and a dislocated shoulder.

Despite that, she’s already played for Victoria and has been part of the Melbourne Renegades squad.

Drinkwell said they hoped that she would have the opportunity to make her debut.

“She bowls fast and has all the attributes of someone who can have a long career.”

National Selector Shawn Flegler said it was pleasing to see Vlaeminck named in the squad alongside fellow potential debutante Georgia Wareham.

“Whilst they haven’t played a lot of domestic cricket Georgia has represented the Melbourne Renegades in the WBBL and both players have come through the player pathway, having taken part in the inaugural overseas under-19 tour and been a part of the National Performance Squad this winter.”
