State wins boost City

Whittlesea City Little Athletics centre won two titles at the Little Athletics Victoria relay state championships on Saturday.

With a record 34 teams representing the centre, City ended with eight teams up on the podium, collecting two gold, four silver and two bronze.

The under-15 mixed 4x100metre relay team of Jackson, Erin, Ruben and Macey defended their title win of 12 months ago, sneaking over the line to win by one hundredth of a second.

The under 12-13 team of Khalid, Daniel, James and James in the medley relay also won gold.

The under-11 mixed 4x200metres relay won silver, along with the under 14-15 girls’ medley, under 14-15 boys’ medley and under-9 boys ‘4x100metres relay teams.

The under-14 mixed relay won bronze in the 4x200metres, as did the under-15 mixed 4×200 metres team.

City team manager Craig Chapman was ecstatic with the results.

“Out of 34 teams that qualified, 21 teams made state finals, and we walked away with two gold, four silver and two bronze state medals,” Chapman said. “With so many teams making finals, some for the first time at state level, this was an amazing experience for all involved.”

Chapman said the signs were good for the future looking at the overall results.

“It goes to show that we were in the mix and not just making up the numbers.”

Chapman put it down to the work done on the track in the past two months, and praised the effort of coaches Andrea Kewish, Jim Bannan, Megan Audino, Cameron and Lachlan Lamb.

“The work the athletes are putting in is starting to show.”
