Hegarty wins gold medal

Here’s a look at the soccer action and news from across Hume and Whittlesea over the last week.

NPL

Hume City captain Nick Hegarty has become just the seventh player to win Football Federation Victoria’s Gold Medal twice.

At the FFV’s night of nights, Hegarty was named the National Premier League’s top player, winning the award on 38 votes.

He finished seven votes clear of Avondale FC’s Massimo Murdocca, who finished on 31 votes.

Hegarty’s medal victory follows his 2012 win when the competition was known as the Victorian Premier League.

Hegarty’s Hume City teammate, Chris Oldfield, was named goalkeeper of the year.

In NPL 2, Whittlesea Ranges Atilla Ofli finished runner up to Dandenong Thunder’s Brandon Barnes for that division’s top honour.

State League 2 north-west

Sporting Whittlesea finished its season with a 4-0 win against Heidelberg Stars on Saturday.

Sporting Whittlesea had a down patch in the middle of the year before picking up towards the end of the season to finish sixth with an 8-5-9 record.

Hume United suffered a 3-1 loss to Geelong SC in its final-round match. Hume United finished the season in ninth, four points behind Sporting Whittlesea.

State league 3 north-west

Upfield finished its season with a 3-1 win against bottom side Lalor United.

United, which will be relegated, struggled as it had most of the season. The side finished with just three wins for the year.

Upfield finished the season in fourth spot on 36 points.

Whittlesea United had an unorthodox end to its season when its match against Williamstown was called off after 27 minutes. Williamstown was up 1-0 at the time.

Being the final round and with the match having no impact on promotion or relegation, it’s expected it won’t be replayed.

After its 21 completed games, Whittlesea United sits fifth on the ladder and equal on points with Upfield.

La Trobe won the battle of the universities, defeating Melbourne University 3-2. La Trobe finished sixth.

State league 4 north

With promotion already sealed, Epping City ended its season with another win to finish undefeated.

City, which defeated Mill Park 5-0, ended the season with 18 wins and four draws.

The loss means Mill Park will finish sixth.

Plenty Valley Lions look set to join Bundoora United in state league 5 next season after the two sides finished 11th and 12th respectively.

When North City Wolves beat Bundoora United 2-0 in the final round, they jumped above Plenty Valley Lions, who lost to West Preston 2-0.

State league 5 north

Greenvale United sealed promotion to state league 4 north with a massive 9-0 against Reservoir Yeti in the final round of the season.

Needing a win to seal a top-two spot and promotion for next season, United came out with all guns blazing.

Leading 4-0 at half-time, United went on to to  ram home its advantage in the second half. Samet Baykan scored a hat-trick, while Paola Lorigo, Charbel Abi-Ishac and Murat Baykan scored two goals each.

Craigieburn City, in its first state league season, finished fourth. The side won its final round-match against Thornbury Athletic 3-1.

Keon Park finished the season in 10th.
