Westmeadows recorded a much-needed win in Essendon District Football League division 1.
In what is turning into a very close season, three of the four games on Saturday were decided by less than 10 points.
The Tigers had a fight on their hands in trying to beat eighth-placed East Keilor.
The Tigers had to come from behind at three-quarter time in the 15.17 (107)-15.10 (100) win.
Aaron Evans kicked three goals in the win with Mohamed Saad named the Tigers’ best.
The Tigers are sixth on the ladder, a game outside the top four.
Tullamarine also had a hard-fought win, beating Oak Park.
The Demons led at every break, but had to hold off the Kangaroos in the final quarter for an 8.10 (58)-8.2 (50) win.
Caleb Harward kicked three goals in a best-on-ground performance for the Demons.
The Demons have moved to second after Airport West lost to Hillside by one point.
In the other match, Glenroy smashed Hadfield by 243 points.
In premier division, ladder leader Greenvale’s winning streak continued as it defeated Essendon Doutta Stars.
The Jets held the lead at every break, but it wasn’t until the last quarter that they really broke away for a 15.17 (107)-9.3 (57).
Jacob Thompson kicked six goals for the Jets, with Fort Caruso named best on ground for a fourth time this season.
The Jets’ big test comes this week when they face second-placed Aberfeldie. The Jets’ only loss this season came round one against the Gorillas.
Craigieburn had another tough day when it was smashed by Keilor. The Blues were on their game from the start and didn’t let the Eagles have much room all day.
It would have been much worse for the Eagles if the Blues had kicked straight.
The Blues won 23.32 (170)-3.1 (19).
In division 2, Jacana returned to the winners’ list with a strong 22.9 (141)-10.20 (80) win against Northern Saints.
Cameron Cloke kicked eight goals for Jacarna, while another former AFL player Chris Johnson kicked five goals in just his second game for the season.
Roxburgh Park suffered a disappointing loss to Burnside Heights.
The undermanned Magpies fought back into the game after being five goals down in the first half.
But the determined Bears and lack of bench due to injuries proved too much for the Magpies, who lost 15.12 (102)-12.8 (80).
