Rising Australian basketball star Ezi Magbegor is the surprise selection in the Australian Opals squad for next month’s Commonwealth Games.
Magbegor, who grew up in Craigieburn, was named in the 12 player squad on Wednesday along with some of Australia’s biggest names.
At just 18, Magbegor is the youngest and least experienced player in the Opals team and one of two debutants in the team.
While it’s her senior team debut, Magbegor has represented Australia at three junior world championships.
Magbegor made her Women’s National Basketball League debut in the most recent season, averaging 6.6 points and nearly four rebounds a game for Canberra Capitals.
She was named the Betty Watson rookie of the year.
Speaking to Star Weekly late last year, she said she was aiming to try and play for the emerging Opals and was hopeful of making it to the Olympics.
She said she never thought she could play basketball for Australia.
