Demons go for more depth

A bit more stability will be the key for Tullamarine this season as it looks to improve on last year’s efforts.

After losing 40 players from the 2014 season, the Demons were the surprise package in division 1 of the Essendon District Football League by reaching the 2015 preliminary final.

But after a necessarily busy off-season last year, the Demons have been one of the quieter teams in 2016.

Coach Anthony Leydin said that while club hadn’t been able to attract any stars, the Demons had added more depth.

“We’re still looking for a couple of players to fill spots,” he said.

“We haven’t been able to add topend players as we’re restricted by budget.

“What we have done is fill around the edges . . . the bottom six or so players. There’s more depth there and we’re pleased to have done that.

“We’ve had six or seven handy types coming in.”

Among those who have joined the Demons are Sean Doyle, Elliot Drew, Joel Flanigan, David Scott, Jack Sims, Dean Simmons, and Mark Speakman.

Leydin said the club wasn’t putting any limits on what they could achieve this season.

“We’re still a work in progress,” he said.

“We’re certainly not limiting what we can achieve but we’re realistic it’s not an even playing field.

“We’re looking at creating a professional environment that players want to be. We have a bit more stability as a club, but where that leaves us this season we’re unsure.”

The club will have a new captain this season, with Col Laurie stepping down after 11 years in the job. The defender will play on but longtime vicecaptain Justin Marcy will captain the side, with

Adam Scott and Craig Steele as joint vice-captains.

The Demons kick off their season at home against Glenroy at Leo DIneen Reserve at 6pm on Saturday, April 9.
