Hume City Broncos held off McKinnon Cougars to seal their third win of the Big V women’s state championship season.
It’s been an up and down start to the season for the Broncos and they had their challenges against the Cougars.
It was an even start, with the Cougars leading by one point at quarter-time. The Broncos had their best quarter of the game in the second quarter to lead by six points at the main break.
Play was even again in the third quarter, with the Broncos hanging on to their six-point lead at the last change.
It was goal for goal in the final quarter, with the Broncos holding on to win 74-71.
Import Lisa Murphy top-scored with 21 points, while Bianca Babic chipped in with 13 points off the bench.
The win came without star guard Nicole Zammit.
The Broncos sit sixth with three wins and two losses after six rounds.
It wasn’t such a good weekend for the Broncos’ men, who lost to Eltham Wildcats also in state championship division.
Only one point separated the teams at half-time, before the Wildcats kicked things up a gear.
They increased the lead to six points at three-quarter time, before a high scoring last quarter gave them an 87-72 win.
Gun scorer Lee Jeka didn’t play which impacted the Broncos.
Trevor Clayton top-scored with 17 points, while Luke Egan scored 13 points coming off the bench.
The Broncos sit sixth after six rounds with three wins and four losses.
