NFL: Bundoora Bulls charge to huge win over Whittlesea

Any doubts about Bundoora’s hunger after winning last season’s premiership were put firmly to bed in the round one clash with Whittlesea on Saturday, the Bulls getting home by 99 points.

A relatively even first term saw Whittlesea, last year’s division two premiers, only nine points behind but by half-time the deficit had blown out to 40.

It was a thoroughly dominant display from the Bulls, who booted six goals in each of their first three quarters and seven in the last in the 125.13 (163) to 9.10 (64) victory.

Former Essendon star Gary Moorcroft – now more than a decade removed from the AFL – booted a lazy eight to be the standout forward on the ground.

He was ably supported by Salvatore Mamone (four), Brendan Carlyon (four) and Cameron Cloke (three). Brayden Shaw was at his typical best.

In the second division, Lalor started the season with a 17-point win against Epping, which was relegated from division one.

Epping led for much of the first three quarters before fading in the last term.

Mernda played promoted division three premiers Panton Hill and pummelled them by 70 points. Andrew Smith led the way with six goals.
