Work to improve reliability of Upfield train line begins

Work to reduce the number of track, signal and overhead equipment faults on the Upfield train line begins tonight.

Until Wednesday, crews will compact rock under the tracks and upgrade electricals to improve the flow of electricity across the line.

The works will take place at night between Upfield and North Melbourne stations.

Buses will replace trains from 8.30pm until the last train each day, with Public Transport Victoria advising commuters that travel times may increase by up to 35 minutes.

Broadmeadows MP Frank McGuire said the works would make the Upfield line more reliable. The line experiences frequent service cancellations.

“The investment in these essential works will deliver more reliable track, signal and overhead equipment. This will lead to fewer faults and better services on the Upfield line,” he said.

Upfield commuters launched a campaign last year to have their train line improved, calling for the duplication of the tracks between Gowrie and Upfield stations.

The Upfield Transport Alliance also wants the line extended to Wallan, for trains to run every 10 minutes during peak periods and for Campbellfield station to re-open on Camp Road.
