More than 1.3 million containers have been recycled in Whittlesea in just five months of Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme.

This means that not only have 1.3 million cans been successfully recycled and kept out of landfill, but also that Whittlesea residents have pocketed $130,000 from recycling cans.

These containers have all been recycled through four reverse vending machines throughout Whittlesea.

The four machines are located at Waterview Recreation Reserve, Mernda, Mosaic Reserve, Lalor, Epping’s Meadowglen International Athletics Stadium and Mill Park Lakes Recreation Reserve, South Morang.

Whittlesea council chair administrator Lydia Wilson said the reverse vending machines have proved to be popular within the community.

“These machines are not only an accessible way for the community to participate in Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme, but also demonstrate our shared commitment to reducing waste and fostering a circular economy, while rewarding the community at the same time,” she said.

“Through this exciting recycling option, our community can help contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable city. The scheme also allows charities and community groups the opportunity to raise funds while making an impact. We are delighted to see so many of our community already taking part.”
