An 18-year-old South Morang man has died after the car he was a passenger in hit a pole in South Morang on Sunday morning.
Emergency services were called to Plenty Road about 1.10am.
Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives believe the vehicle, a silver sedan, was travelling north on Plenty Road when the driver lost control and crashed into a pole about 1.10am.
The 18-year-old died at the scene.
The driver, an 18-year-old Eltham man, was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
An 18-year-old Mernda man, who was also in the vehicle, was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The exact circumstances surrounding the crash are yet to be determined and the investigation is ongoing.
