A Campbellfield distillery has started brewing hand sanitiser to help keep its factory open.
Top Shelf International’s NED Whisky came up with the idea late last month as it looked for ways to soften the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on its business.
Top Shelf International executive chairman Adem Karafili said the switch to hand sanitiser had not only been good for the business but had also improved the mental wellbeing of staff.
“It has kept a lot of people employed who otherwise would have been stood down. We wanted to ensure we kept our doors open and utilise the assets we have,” he said
“[It] has kept people motivated and upbeat.”
The distillery is producing hand sanitiser that is 65 per cent ethanol and is available in 100ml and 750ml bottles
Mr Karafilli said the distillery was aiming to have produced 100,000 bottles of hand sanitiser by the end of the week.
“There is obviously a community need for it,” he said.
Mr Karafili said bottles of hand sanitiser have already been dropped off to first responders, GPs, refugee agencies and health workers who were in short supply.
