Quacking success

Surfers were quacking last week as URBNSURF held its inaugural Rubber Duck Party Wave.

Joining the surfers on the waves were 100 rubber ducks that put their bills on the line for charity to raise money for Movember.

The ducks were dropped into the waves, with the first one to reach the bottom claiming the win.

Heats and then semi-finals and a final were run, with duck 49 coming out the winner.

The winning duck was Madagascar Pochard, purchased by a group of five friends from Queensland and New South Wales.

The day raised more than $12,000 with contributions from 80 donors and more than 5000 people tuned in to watch the event via a live stream.

URBNSURF chief executive Damon Tudor said the company was stoked to host the event and support such a worthy cause, particularly after the challenges that Victorians have faced in 2020.

“It’s been a tough year for Victorians, who’ve faced bushfires and two rounds of COVID-19 lockdowns – so we’re proud to back initiatives like the Rubber Duck Party Wave that support those in need,” he said.

“We’re excited to unite with our friends at Salty Social Club, Movember and Waves of Wellness to put on an awesome event, raise essential funding for men’s and mental health, and connect through our shared love of surfing.

“Thanks to the generosity of our members, guests and the public, the funds raised by this event will make a substantial difference to the lives of thousands of Aussie men, and we’re stoked to do our part.”

The Waves of Wellness (WOW) Foundation also showcased their Movember-funded surf therapy program WOW Sand ‘n’ Surf on the day.

Event organiser Blake Norrish, from Salty Social Club, said he was inspired to run the duck race to raise funds and awareness for men’s health following his own dad’s close call with prostate cancer.

“Thanks to the support of the team from URBNSURF who have really got behind this whacky initiative in a big way.”
