New ramps open this week

Five of the six new ramps between the Hume Freeway and Edgars Road of the M80 Ring Road will be opened by the end of this week, Major Road Projects Victoria (MRPV) has announced.

The new Greensborough-bound ramps from the Hume Freeway to the M80, and the M80 to Edgars Road will open by Friday, December 17.

It follows the new Altona-bound ramps from Edgars Road to the Hume Freeway, and Edgars Road to the M80 opening on Monday.

MRPV project director Andrew Robilliard said the opening of the new ramps was a significant part of the M80 upgrade project.

“We’re powering ahead with the M80 Ring Road Upgrade – opening five of the six ramps between the Hume Freeway and Edgars Road before the end of the year and now getting on with completing the full Edgars to Sydney roads section,” he said.

“These new ramps will improve safety and traffic flow by separating traffic entering and exiting the freeway, and minimising merging and weaving – ensuring safer and more reliable journeys for motorists in Melbourne’s north.”

According to MRPV, drivers will also benefit from improved travel times and better access to other freeways, interstate links, as local and arterial roads.

The new ramps are over six metres high, so that trucks and other vehicles can safely pass underneath.

As of Friday, only one ramp connecting the Hume Freeway and Edgars Road will be left to complete.

MRPV said remaining works included installation of overhead signage structures, installing barriers, landscaping, commissioning the smart freeway management system, and completing the final asphalt surfacing prior to opening additional lanes on the freeway.
