Brian Hanley has been teaching in the north for decades, and was recently awarded an Order of Australia Medal (OAM) to acknowledge his efforts. He spoke to Michaela Meade about his teaching journey.

What’s your connection to the northern suburbs?

I have worked in secondary education in the northern suburbs since 1987. I have been based in Bundoora and Epping and my responsibilities as school principal have been serving students from all of the northern suburban region. I have now served the community of St Monica’s College, Epping, for more than 30 years and have enjoyed watching so many Monicans be successful in their chosen fields. Children of the northern suburbs of Melbourne deserve the best education we can possibly provide them.

What do you enjoy most about the area?

I have always been most comfortable with the citizens with whom I have worked for the past 35 years. I have enjoyed the vitality and growth of the region. Our students need to know and respect their local area but also understand there is a life beyond Epping. Our college challenges our students to be good citizens who respect their family, neighbours and friends.

How did it feel to be awarded an OAM?

I was very surprised to be afforded this unexpected honour. It has been my privilege to work in secondary education in the north and I am very grateful that this has been formally recognised. I acknowledge my peers and family who have supported my work, as well as students, parents and carers, and thank them for their contribution to my success.

What made you so passionate about teaching?

I care greatly for children and their personal and educational development. I have served the Catholic Church through my continuous work in Catholic Education. I work by the credo that ‘every child matters’ and hope that I can positively influence the life of every Monican who passes through our college.

What words of wisdom would you pass on to someone hoping to follow in your footsteps?

I hope that school principals have the interests of their school communities genuinely and always at heart. I trust that they will gain immense personal and professional satisfaction from the role. Knowing that you can make a difference in somebody’s life should be a motivating factor every day. Just remember our college motto – pray and persevere.
