Hume and Whittlsea pet owners can choose names with confidence, with the top pet names of 2021 announced by the Lost Dogs’ Home, with traditional names back in fashion.

Data taken from the organisation’s adoption records revealed that Buddy was the most popular name amongst dog adopters, while Charlie topped the list for cat adopters.

Lune, which was last year’s most popular choice for both dogs and cats, was still popular, but fell one spot in each category.

The Home’s spokesperson Suzana Talevski said it made sense for Buddy to top the dog name list, as it is synonymous with a bond of friendship.

“Buddy is a timeless name for your best friend,” Ms Talevski said.

“With more and more people recognising and appreciating animals as family, Buddy is a name that speaks volumes of the appreciation we have for our doggos.”

Ms Talevski said Charlie was an old-time favourite name choice for furry friends.

“One of the most popular names during the late 19th century, Charlie is a name that can be used for both male or female cats,” she said.

“Charlie is seen as a very friendly name and has its roots in a German word meaning ‘free man’ – though we hope you don’t let your Charlies roam free through your neighbourhood.”

Other top names for dogs included Charlie, Harry and Daisy, while other top cat names were Milo, Lily and Simba.
