Kangan Institute student baker Janait Solafa wins industry award

A cake based on cult game Fortnite has helped a budding Craigieburn baker win an award at a statewide baking industry show.

Janait Solafa took out third place in the student novelty cake category at the Baking Industry Trade Show, which was held at Moonee Valley Racecourse recently.

Ms Solafa is studying baking at Kangan Institute.

She said a lot of thought and planning went into creating her cake.

“I designed and made it all from scratch, and building it took two days. Getting the measurements right to build the tower was especially challenging,” Ms Solafa said.

She said taking part in competitions helped develop her baking and decorating skills.

“I’ve always liked baking and cake decorating and dreamt of becoming a baker. I wanted to do something for myself with my kids now in school, so I enrolled in the course at Kangan Institute,” she said.

“After the course, I hope to set up a cake business at home and open my own bakery in the future.

“I’m also looking forward to my next competition where I’ll compete in wedding cake decorating.”

Ms Solafa was one of eight Kangan students to compete in the trade show.
