Whittlesea SES has become the first SES unit in Victoria to buy a thermal imaging camera, capable of detecting a person up to 2.4 kilometres away.

The volunteer unit recently bought a Forward Looking Infrared Thermal Imaging Camera after receiving a $15,000 donation from Epping’s Casa D’Abruzzo Club.

Whittlesea SES member Emilia Lisa Sterjova said the camera would be a big help in searches.

“It is a really important piece of equipment,” she said. “We will be able to find people a lot sooner and they will have a better chance of survival.”

This is not the first time the Casa D’Abruzzo Club has made a donation to the Whittlesea SES, with the club and its members regular supporters of the unit.

“It is really lovely to see such support from the community,” Ms Sterjova said.
