Twenty-eight Hume students are set to receive $1000 scholarships to support their education, under a council-backed program designed to recognise consistent effort and academic growth.
The 2025 Youth Opportunity Scholarship was endorsed by Hume council at the latest council meeting on Tuesday, June 10, with each secondary school and TAFE across the municipality nominating one student to receive the funding.
Councillor Sam Misho, who moved the recommendation, said the scholarship aligns with the council’s broader strategy to improve access to education and leadership pathways.
“Tonight I’m pleased to present the 2025 Youth Opportunity Scholarship–a vital initiative aligned with our strategic goal to create leadership opportunities for everyone to reach their potential,” Cr Misho said.
“This scholarship exemplifies councillors’ commitment to supporting the academic journey and well-being of young people among our municipality, especially those demonstrating determination and ongoing progress with their studies.”
Now in its second year, the scholarship aims to support year 10 students as they transition through school, providing help with textbooks, specialist equipment or tutoring.
This year, 28 students–one from each secondary school and TAFE within Hume–have been nominated by their principals,” Cr Misho said.
“Each will receive a thousand-dollar scholarship in recognition of their consistent effort and growth toward their learning goals.”
The funds will be paid directly to schools, which must manage them in line with council’s grants policy.
Schools are required to submit financial reports by March 2026.
