A long awaited feasibility study into the development of a multicultural hub in Melbourne’s north is one step closer to fruition with up to $200,000 being provided in the Victorian budget 2022-23.

Member for Yuroke Ros Spence made the announcement on Wednesday, June 29.

The feasibility study is to determine the level of need, the preferred model and the best location for a multicultural hub.

Findings of the feasibility study will help inform future state government budget investments.

Hume councillor Joseph Haweil has been advocating for a study into the potential for a hub during his time as mayor last year.

“I am delighted that the Victorian State Government has included funding to examine the feasibility of a multicultural hub in Hume’s northern growth corridor,” Cr Haweil said.

“As Victorian Multicultural Affairs Minister and our local member, Ros Spence has been a champion for multicultural communities and this funding reflects her commitment to seeing such a facility delivered.

“The results of the 2021 Australian census have again affirmed Hume’s immense diversity with nearly 45% of Hume residents born overseas and 52.1% of residents speaking a language other than English at home.

“These communities have long cried out for access to facilities that will help support the retention of language, the celebration of culture and for culturally appropriate service provision.”

The community hub would provide an activity space for the multicultural community in Yuroke as well as help create more jobs in the area.

“The community’s interest for a multicultural hub is often raised with me and I am proud to have secured funding for a feasibility study for such a space,” Ms Spence said.

“This funding will support the efforts of Councillor Haweil, who has been advocating on behalf of multicultural and multifaith groups in the community for such a hub and I look forward to receiving the study.”
