Charges over luxury goods heists

A Mickleham man is one of two men charged after a dramatic series of ram raids rocked Essendon and Melbourne’s CBD last month, with more than $400,000 worth of high-end goods allegedly stolen.

The chaos began just after 4am on Wednesday, April 16, when a silver Toyota Hilux smashed through the front roller door of an optometrist on Mount Alexander Road, Essendon.

Police allege a group of men entered the store and stole approximately $300,000 worth of designer sunglasses and prescription glasses.

Just two hours later, a luxury store on Collins Street was targeted in a similar fashion.

The same Hilux is believed to have been used to ram into the shopfront before a number of offenders allegedly stole around $130,000 in goods.

They fled in the Hilux and a grey BMW.

Detectives have since arrested and charged two men in connection with the raids.

The 24-year-old Mickleham man was charged with 20 offences, including burglary and theft.

A 38-year-old man from Pascoe Vale South faces seven similar charges.
