Whittlesea’s green thumbs raise money for NT vegetable garden

Green thumbs at Whittlesea’s Greenbrook Triple G Community Garden are holding a herb sale to raise money for a vegetable garden to be established in an Aboriginal community in the Northern Territory.

Co-ordinator of the Greenbrook Community House Liz Walker says the garden, which has its second ‘birthday’ at the end of the month, is maintained by eight gardening volunteers and members of disability group the Greenbrook Green-thumbs.

Right now, the garden is blooming with lush, fragrant herbs including sage, Vietnamese mint, lemongrass, oregano, basil and garlic, all of which are on sale to the community until tomorrow evening. The garden is also brimming with beetroot, lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower, onions, potatoes, silverbeet, spinach and spring onion not yet ready for harvest.

Ms Walker says the garden will continue to flourish during the cooler months after a greenhouse was donated by Bunnings Warehouse in Epping last week. She says money raised through the herb sale will be split between the community garden in Whittlesea and the establishment of the garden for people in need in Katherine (NT).

The garden is at 40 McFarlane Crescent, Epping. Details: 9408 0916 or email greenbrookch@whittlesea.vic.gov.au
