UPDATE: The Western Ring Road has reopened after a fatal smash that left a man dead and traffic in chaos for hours on Tuesday afternoon.
Police said a man driving a utility vehicle crashed into the rear of a truck, which was stopped in the emergency lane on the Western Ring Road between Sydney Road and Pascoe Vale Road, Altona-bound, on Tuesday about 2.30pm.
Police confirmed the male driver of the ute died at the scene.
The driver of the truck did not require medical attention.
A Vicroads spokeswoman said the Western Ring Road reopened about 6.15pm.
“All lanes clear Altona-bound between Sydney Road and Pascoe Vale Road after a multi-vehicle collision,” Vicroads said.
Drivers would continue to experience delays back to Edgars Road until about 7pm.
Drivers were also experiencing delays Greensborough-bound near Sydney Road after another crash around 6pm.
Two lanes remain closed at 6.30pm after that accident, the spokeswoman said.
