In a coup for Hume residents lacking kitchen skills, renowned British chef Jamie Oliver’s Ministry of Food mobile kitchen will be in town offering cooking classes from November 27.
Oliver’s program offers communities affordable five-week cooking courses designed to educate and empower people to enjoy food and cooking.
Hume mayor Geoff Porter says the initiative is part of a city-wide approach to improve health and well-being.
“We’re working hard to increase healthy eating and physical activity across the municipality,” Cr Porter said. “Jamie’s Ministry of Food mobile kitchen will complement a range of exciting activities.”
The philosophy behind Oliver’s program is that a few basic skills and some solid cooking knowledge can empower families to cook healthy meals and save money.
His purpose-built mobile kitchen will host 90-minute cooking classes each week, for five weeks, covering cooking basics and Oliver’s tips for preparing simple, nutritious and cheap meals using fresh ingredients.
“By teaching basic cooking skills, Jamie’s Ministry of Food helps people gain confidence in the kitchen, which leads to better food and ultimately better health,” said ministry chief executive Alicia Peardon.
The mobile kitchen, to be based at Broadmeadows, will be open seven days a week and be run by a team of ‘ministry’ trainers.
The program is being partially funded by the state government, which committed $2.87 million to support its roll-out in Victoria.
“Bringing Jamie’s Ministry of Food to communities across Victoria will enable more than 10,000 people to take part in the program and learn the skills required to cook fresher and healthier foods,” Health Minister David Davis said.
