The state government’s newly released Plan for Melbourne was greeted with muted reactions in Melbourne’s north.
Whittlesea mayor Rex Griffin said his council was pleased Planning Minister Matthew Guy had stressed the importance of directing new development to areas with appropriate infrastructure to support higher populations.
“Previous planning frameworks have left the City of Whittlesea in the situation where this is not the case, such as the Aurora housing estate that has more than 20 bus stops with no buses,” Cr Griffin said.
Hume mayor Geoff Porter has invited Growth Areas Authority chief executive Peter Seamer to brief his council on the finer details of how the new plan will impact in the north.
The plan bypasses Broadmeadows as part of the metropolitan activity centre network and proposes a new employment precinct on the municipality’s far northern boundary at Lockerbie, abutting Mitchell shire.
The minister has called for submissions on Plan for Melbourne to be made by December 6.
