FFV: Bundoora United men’s and women’s teams over

Bundoora United’s season ended for both its men’s and women’s teams on pitches just metres apart at Darebin on Friday night.

The women were bundled out of the FFV women’s premier league 2-1 by Heidelberg United, while the men were were humiliated 7-1 by Melton in state league 5.

Bundoora’s men had already won promotion from state league 5 north and took on the SL5 west champions with pride, rather than promotion, at stake.

It was clear from the outset which team had the state title in mind as Melton raced to a 3-0 lead in the first five minutes and made it 4-0 by the 17-minute mark.

Daniel Baricevic pegged one back for Bundoora in the 63rd minute, but Melton responded soon after to make it 5-1 and end any remote hope of a remarkable comeback. Melton will now play St Kilda City for the state league 5 championship after St Kilda won the south v. east semi-final 6-0 against Ringwood City.

Bundoora’s women came up short when Heidelberg United recovered from a goal down to win. 2-1.

Bundoora took the lead 10 minutes in when Enza Barilla’s shot from a tight angle bounced in off the post.

But Heidelberg replied with a goal on the half-hour from Leigh Gray before taking the lead two minutes before half time via Erin Brennan.

Bundoora struggled to manufacture a decent chance on goal in the second half.

Heidelberg advances to a knockout semi-final against Box Hill United.
