THE Doreen Country Women’s Association is breaking out the pumpkin
scones and cups of tea to celebrate a legal victory allowing it to hold
a market at Hilltop Park in Landano Way, Doreen.
The market, aimed at raising money for charity, was held six times
at Hilltop Park and won council approval before a local couple objected
to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal earlier this year.
The CWA switched to a smaller venue at the Laurimar Community Activity Centre but lost half its stallholders and revenue.
The couple, whose property backs on to Hilltop Park, told the
tribunal the market caused parking problems, restricted access to the
park’s toilets, playground and barbecues and the noise from portable
generators used by food vans “overwhelms the quiet enjoyment of the
park”.
Tribunal member Michael Nelthorpe affirmed the council’s decision
to give the CWA a six-month permit to operate the market at the park.
