A 19 year old Mill Park man was among six P-platers booked for driving dangerously after attending a Gippsland leadership camp last weekend.
The local driver along with the five others – a 21-year-old Sunshine North man, a 22-year-old Warrandyte man, a 19-year-old Chadstone man, a 19-year-old Boronia man and a 19-year-old Burwood woman – all copped a $289 fine and three demerit points after they were caught by a State Highway patrol at Toongabbie on the Traralgon-Maffra Road about 2pm on Sunday.
Each of the cars was clocked at about 120km/h in a 100km/h zone and, when pulled over, drivers told police they were returning home from a leadership camp at nearby Licola and had succumbed to “peer pressure” to speed.
State Highway Patrol Acting Sergeant Kevin Byrne said he was disappointed by the careless stunt.
“These are six young people who had just been at a leadership camp,” he said.
“The next thing they do is get behind the wheel and act irresponsibly.
“The potential consequences of this behaviour are horrifying.
“If one of the front cars came to grief there would have been multiple vehicles involved and no doubt another multiple fatal collision on our country roads.
“It’s time that people in the community started to take ownership of road trauma and stopped taking unacceptable risks on our roads.”
