NPL: Hume City back on winning list, downing Knights

Hume City is back on the winners’ list, with two second-half goals getting it over the line against Melbourne Knights in the National Premier League on Sunday.

With both teams coming off losses, City looked to keep possession instead of purely attacking.

The tactic paid off for City, which scored the only two goals of the game at Broadmeadows Valley.

City coach Louie Acevski said whichever team made the least mistakes was going to get the win.

“It was a great result and you can’t complain when you get a win,” he said.

“It was a very even game in the first half and [in the] second we had a couple of chances.

“The game was pretty even and there weren’t many scoring opportunities as it was more a possession game instead of an attacking one.’’

Acevski said his side made the most of its opportunities, with Baki Efe and Nicholas Hegarty scoring.

“We hit them on the counterattack and scored the two goals,’’ he said. ‘‘I thought we could have scored another two.’’

Acevski said it was good to get a victory after poor results in previous weeks.

“Both teams were coming off negative results and we wanted to play well and get points on the board,” he said.

“Besides the scores we have been playing well. That’s been the only negative.”

He said Shane Rexhepi and Nicholas Hegarty performed well in a team performance.

“Everyone can best anyone in this competition,’’ Acevski said.

“There are no finals, so we are looking to finish in the top half of the competition. Hopefully we can get a run on and get some more wins under our belts.”

This week City, seventh, plays the bottom-of-the-table Goulburn Valley Suns at home.

In NPL 1, Whittlesea Rangers defeated Moreland Zebras 2-1, with Ahmet Turer and Matthew Luliano netting. This week, the Rangers face St Albans Saints at Epping Stadium.
