FFV: Sporting Whittlesea plugs injury gap to record third straight win

Just three weeks ago, Sporting Whittlesea was one point from the bottom of the ladder in FFV state league 2 north west.

But three straight wins have lifted the club to sixth, just six points behind second.

Coach Kevin Theuma said a meeting with the leadership group was the catalyst for the form turnaround.

“We decided to make some changes in the structure and they’ve worked well,” he said.

“They’re just simple changes, but we’re still a new group and it was always going to take time for the boys to gel.”

The success was a 1-0 win on Saturday over Moreland United, which went into the match equal top on points.

“The way we’ve been playing, I was confident of a good result but I would have been happy with a draw,” Theuma said.

“We learned a lot from last time we played them, when we made a few mistakes.

“We were a little lucky at times, but that’s the game.”

Theuma said it was a pretty even match.

“Both teams had chances in the first half,” he said. “We had a one-on-one with the goalie and missed that, but the game could have gone either way.”

Robert Penetta was the game’s only goal scorer.

The win came despite Sporting Whittlesea missing five of its regular team.

“We’ve had a lot of injuries, but the other boys are stepping up,” Theuma said.

“We’re now a lot closer to the top of the table, but we’re not talking promotion at the moment. But in another five weeks, who knows.”

Theuma said the club was looking at re-establishing its junior program next season.

“We definitely want them on board for next season as they’re the development path into the senior side,” he said.

Elsewhere in state league 2 north west, Hume United defeated La Trobe University 2-1.

Northern Roosters had a 4-1 win over Essendon Royals in state league 3 north west.

Elsewhere, Altona City defeated North City Wolves 2-1 and Whittlesea United lost 2-1 to Western Eagles,

In state league 4 north, Meadow Park Eagles lost 4-1 to Darebin United, Epping City defeated Bundoora United 2-1, and Parkville Panthers were too strong for Northern Falcons ,winning 3-0.
