EDFL: Roxburgh Park make grand final after one-point thriller

Roxburgh Park is through to the Essendon District Football League division 2 grand final by the barest of margins.

After their worst performance for the year in the opening week of the finals, the Magpies were made to fight for a grand final spot and defeated Coburg Districts by one-point,12.9 (81) to 11.14 (80) in the preliminary final at Coburg.

While the Magpies got the win, it was never a sure thing.

No more than two goals separated the teams all day.

Magpies coach Paul Derrick said he thought his side could hold onto its two-goal three quarter time lead in the final term.

“We were two goals up, but they had the wind in the final term,” he said.

“We kept our head over the footy and knew that we needed to score goals in the final quarter to get the win. We managed to get those goals and held the lead the whole last quarter.

“They kicked a goal with 10 seconds to go to make the margin one point.”

Derrick said it was an exciting time for the club.

“None of the boys have grand final experience and neither do I.

“We need to take it as it comes and provide a good contest.”

MORE TO COME.
