NPL: Whittlesea Ranges plan fresh start after loss to Bulleen Lions

A year of development and learning has come to an end for the Whittlesea Ranges in soccer’s National Premier League 1.

Starting with one of the most inexperienced sides, Whittlesea finished the competition’s inaugural season in 13th spot, with six wins, four draws and 15 losses.

Coach Vinco Buljubasic said this year was more about team building.

“Results wise, it could have been better,” he said. “But we’re happy with the way we played and we’ve gained experience for next year

“Some games, we’ve been unlucky not to get the results and the ladder position could have been different.

“But we wanted to give the experience to the younger players. There’s not too many teams out there that have done the same.”

Buljubasic said his young charges had relished the opportunity.

“There haven’t been any standouts in regards to a breakout season … [but] they have definitely thrived, playing against the older players. I’ve seen improvements from everyone.”

Buljubasic said the round 21 game against fourth-placed Richmond, which the Ranges won 4-3, was the season’s highlight.

The club lost its final match of the year to Bulleen Lions, 6-2, on Sunday.

Scores were 1-1 at half-time before the Lions put in a dominant second half display to end the season on a winning note.

Kliment Dimitrieski and Daniel Peluso were the Ranges’ scorers.

Buljubasic said the club was ready to start planning for next year.

“We’re looking at getting two or three experienced but still young players to add to the team, but that will depend on who stays and goes.

“We haven’t sat down with the players at this stage.”

Buljubasic said he would like to continue coaching next year.

“We’ll have a review with all the coaches, see what we want to achieve next year and go from there.

“Hopefully, I’m still here and can build on this year.”
