Organic recycling for local businesses

Local businesses have the chance to lead the way in sustainability through a new food organics recycling trial launched by Whittlesea council.

The six-month initiative which was announced on Tuesday, September 23 aims to reduce the amount of food waste sent to landfill while supporting a more circular economy.

Businesses that join the cause will receive free food and garden waste bins, customised collection services, staff training and ongoing support.

Food scraps collected during the trial will be composted rather than dumped, aiming to help cut disposal costs while creating environmental benefits for the wider community.

The recycled food waste will be used for local farms, kindergartens, and community gardens to support local farming, gardening and composting.

Council says participating businesses could reduce landfill fees, improve compliance with sustainability targets and showcase environmental leadership, while also reducing the amount of food waste sent to landfill through access to tailored collection services designed for specific operations.

Feedback gathered from the trial aims to help shape Whittlesea’s future waste and recycling programs.

Expressions of interest are open to restaurants, cafes, food producers, offices, retailers, service providers and manufacturers.

To be eligible, applicants must be located within the City of Whittlesea’s collection areas, hold a valid ABN and the relevant permits.
