Cyclists to ride in memory of former Whittlesea chief executive

Cyclists will hit the road later this month for the David Turnbull Memorial Bike Ride, honouring the late Whittlesea chief executive and his decades of service to the community.

Riders will set off from the Whittlesea Community Centre at 10am on Sunday, March 30, tackling either a 20km or 40km route through the area Mr Turnbull spent 21 years shaping through local government.

Mr Turnbull, who passed away from cancer in 2020, was a driving force behind Whittlesea’s growth and recovery efforts after the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires.

In 2023, he was posthumously awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for his contributions to local government.

The ride, organised by friends and colleagues, will raise funds for the Country Fire Authority, a cause close to Mr. Turnbull’s heart.

Participants will finish at the Whittlesea Fire Brigade, where a barbecue lunch awaits.

Whittlesea chief executive Craig Lloyd said Mr Turnbull’s impact is still felt today.

“David’s legacy continues in many areas, from his advocacy for local government to his leadership in times of crisis,” he said.

Entry is $45, including lunch, or $15 for just the barbecue.
