The Whittlesea Agricultural Society will benefit from funding boosts regardless of whether the Labor or Liberal parties win this month’s state election.
Labor candidate for Yan Yean Lauren Kathage has pledged $50,000 for the Whittlesea Show if re-elected.
Liberal candidate for Yan Yean Richard Welch has promised $280,000 towards electrical infrastructure upgrades at the Whittlesea Showgrounds.
This year’s Whittlesea Show was meant to be held on November 5 and 6 but was postponed because the Whittlesea Showgrounds were too wet and muddy as a result of recent heavy rain.
The show began as a fair in 1859.
“The Whittlesea Show is an important staple for our community, it plays an important role in educating children about the agriculture sector and showcases the best of our state’s world class produce,” Ms Kathage said,
“Labor is doing what matters – making sure the much-loved Whittlesea Show can continue to feature in families’ calendars for years to come.”
The Whittlesea Showgrounds are home to the Whittlesea Show, the Whittlesea Monday Market, the Whittlesea Rodeo, the football and cricket clubs, men’s shed and horse and pony club.
According to the Liberals, the showground buildings do not have an electrical connection, meaning events require generators to be hired or bought.
