After weeks of waiting to get out on the pitch, Plenty Valley suffered a first up loss in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association north-south season.

With the first five weeks washed out, the weather gods were finally on the side of cricketers as the Subbies season finally got underway.

For the Bats, they started the season at home against Kew at Yarrambat Reserve on Saturday.

Kew won the toss and elected to bat.

While the Bats took one quick wicket, Kew got going and moved to 1-156. While Kew lost a number of wickets later in the innings, the damage was already done.

Kew was bowled out for 216 with eight balls remaining.

Lithsura Caldera was the seventh bowler used by the Bats, but was the most effective, taking 4-35 off nine overs.

In reply, the Bats lost an early wicket to be 1-7. They managed to get a bit of a partnership, before losing 3-20 to slip to 4-59.

The Bats were then able to form a partnership between skipper Michael Rogneda and Henry Cullen.

The two put on more than 100 for the fifth wicket to give the side a chance. The loss of Cullen, Alex Cole and then Rogneda ended the Bats chances.

The Bats finished 7-184 from their overs.

Cullen top scored with 72, while Rogneda made 49, but there was little other support.

In other matches, Elsternwick made 7-221 to sneak past Brunswick’s 9-217.

Moorabbin’s 165 was enough against Strathmore, bowling Strathmore out for 150.

Brighton beat Malvern by three wickets, while Ormond’s 4-247 was way too much for Port Melbourne which was bowled out for 137.

Coburg made 261 on the back of 108 from Aaron Ayre against Preston, before bowling Preston out for 155, and St Bernards passed Ivanhoe’s title of 146 two wickets down.
